A private school located in Manhattan has recently issued a 12 page guide to students and staff suggesting that they use “inclusive language,” staying away from words like mom and dad and parents.
The Grace Church School is an Episcopalian School that teaches grade K – 12 and and issued the guide as part of the school’s mission for inclusivity of students, families and faculty from various backgrounds.
The school suggest in the guide that students utilize words like, “folks” “families” “guardians” as opposed to the typical reference of mom, dad, or parent. Instead of using the term “babysitter or nanny” they suggest using the term, “caregiver”
“Families are formed and structured in many ways. At Grace Church School, we use inclusive language that reflects this diversity. It’s important to refrain from making assumptions about who kids live with, who cares for them, whether they sleep in the same place every night, whether they see their parents, etc.,” – excerpt from the Grace School Church Guide
Also included in the guided are terms that should be used in regards to race, gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity.
The Grace Church School defends the guide and feels that it gives suggestions that will helps all students feel included.
“Grace is an Episcopal school. As part of our Episcopal identity, we recognize the dignity and worth common to humanity,” – Rev. Robert Pennoyer, assistant head of school
