LANSING, Mi (Great Lakes News) – A Michigan Republican is asking Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to do her job and start counting signatures on the Unlock Michigan ballot initiative.
State Rep. Mike Muller (R-Linden) says the group turned in 539,000 signatures on October 2, 2020. The initiative seeks to repeal the Michigan’s Emergency Powers of the Governor Act passed in 1945.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer used that law as the basis of her unending executive orders and state lockdowns.
Although the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that law unconstitutional around the same time as the signature submissions, validated signatures would allow the Michigan Legislature to repeal the 1945 law or put it on the ballot for a statewide vote.
When Great Lakes News reached out to Benson’s office, officials said the petitions will be reviewed “long before the 2022 deadline.”
