Overwhelming Majority Of Americans Want Voter ID

A poll released on Friday by the AP-NORC shows that an immense majority of Americans believe individuals should be required to show photo identification in order to vote.

According to the poll,  Seventy-two percent of the individuals polled felt that some type of identification should be required in order to vote. Ninety-one percent of Republicans were in support of voter ID along with fifty-six percent of Democrats.

The poll revealed sixty percent of Americans believe that people should automatically be registered to vote when they get a state identification card or driver’s license.

Fifty-three percent of the individuals polled felt that people should be allowed to register to vote at the polling place on election day. Sixty percent of Democrats were in favor of this option, along with thirty-eight percent of Republicans.

In March, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, otherwise known as “For the People Act.” This will allow people to have same day voter registration for federal elections, automatic voter registration through state agencies and a minimum two week early voting period. It would also allow people to vote with no proof of identity if they sign a sworn statement.

“The bill in Congress would require all states with an ID requirement to allow voters to sign a sworn statement under penalty of perjury and have their ballot counted.” – AP report

The AP-NORC poll was taken nationwide and involved 1,166 adults who participated either through an online or telephone survey. The poll was conducted from March 25-29 2021.
