It turns out defunding the police wasn’t such a great idea. In 2020, Portland cut police funding by $16 million. This year? The city has already had 20 homicides, compared to just one at this time last year.
Portland’s Mayor Ted Wheeler, who supported the defunding of the police, is now asking for an additional $2 million for police funding due to the skyrocketing homicide and crime rate.
Wheeler voiced his request for re-funding the police during his State of the City address on Friday. The city council has yet to weigh in on the request.
Portland has consistently been dealing with extremist rioters from ANTIFA and BLM since last spring’s death of George Floyd, and there is no signs of it ending.

Thursday night ANTIFA rioters attacked a federal courthouse, including setting it on fire while people were inside. Some would say it was an insurrection, but no word from federal officials on that as of yet.
Biden has taken action in reference to Portland, he signed an executive order in February repealing the “anarchist jurisdiction” tag from Portland which President Trump had placed on it after months of lawlessness. The order Trump signed, and Biden revoked, allowed the possibility of reducing federal funding to jurisdictions who did not protect its citizens from anarchy and violence.
Most of Mayor Wheeler’s $2 million funding request would go toward hiring five new detectives and forming a special team to focus on gun violence. The Portland Police’s gun violence team was disbanded after they were defunded last year.
