Democrat actor Matthew McConaughey is considering a run for Texas governor in 2022. That is very bad news for Texas Republicans, as most voters, regardless of ideology, are drooling fools when it comes to celebrities. Would Donald Trump have won without the years of free publicity on “The Apprentice”? Doubtful. McConaughey has a down home drawl and demeanor. He plays heroes in movies. He’s remained relatively apolitical up to now, so he hasn’t alienated too many people.

We might also remember, in Ted Cruz’s last senate run Beto O’Rourke got too close for comfort. McConaughey could be a major problem for Greg Abbott if the incumbent runs for reelection, as most think he will.

Abbott is arguably the best governor in the United States. His calm reasonable conservative leadership kept Texas from the worst excesses of Covid hysteria and because of that and sound financial policies people and businesses are flocking to Texas. That also could be an issue, as some of those people are from blue states and are bringing their politics with them. Combine that with the possible influx of illegal voters that would be allowed under  HR1 and you have a perfect storm for the Texas governor’s office to turn blue.

Abbott could fight back on the Hollywood issue, but McConaughey’s people will see that coming and be ready on it. It would be a wild election, as Democrats know if they can take Texas in 2022 they may also do it in 2024. Texas has not had a Democrat governor since 1995.

FNC: “Matthew McConaughey told Jimmy Fallon that he thinks taking political office is an honorable thing to do. McConaughey’s statement comes 10 days after the 51-year-old actor confirmed to The Balanced Voice Podcast that he has thought of running for governor in Texas.”

“Well, it’s come up a lot lately. And I’m gonna say to you now the same thing I’ve been saying, which is true. It’s not a dodge. And when I say it’s something I’m giving consideration, absolutely,” McConaughey said Friday. “What an honorable thing to even be able to consider. But that’s no further than that right now, sir.”

Do You Support Donald Trump For President In 2024?

On the recent ice storm in Texas? “Look, we’re doing good. We had, you know, a couple pipes break. We’ve had to pull up some drywall in the house. Lost power. Just got off having to boil water four days ago. But the problem in Texas is there’s tens of thousands that aren’t as good a shape as we are right now. There’s a lot of people that are out of home.”

On Governor Abbott’s Covid policy to open up the state? “My reaction to that is, I was a little dumbfounded by the decision. I understand ‘go back to work.’ What I did not understand was ‘pull the mask mandate.'” Yup, that’s a politician talking.
