In an article today in the New York Times, Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz was said to have been under criminal investigation in the fall for sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old girl. The alleged crime occurred approximately two years ago.
Rep. Gaetz (R-FL) wasted no time firing back on Twitter:
Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name.
We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter…

…of the ongoing extortion investigation.
I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations.

In an interview Tuesday, Congressman Gaetz said he had no plans to resign his House seat. Gaetz has denied any romantic relationship with minors and said “It is verifiably false that I have traveled with a 17-year-old woman.”
During an interview with Tucker Carlson tonight, Rep. Gaetz accused a former DOJ official, “David McGee,” as being involved in the extortion plot.
