Germany, France, Italy, and Spain are the latest countries to suspend the use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine due to reports of dangerous blood clots in some recipients.  Finland, Ireland, Thailand, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, Congo and Bulgaria all have suspended the use already.

Three vaccines are approved in Europe, including AstraZeneca.  Government regulators say there is no evidence the vaccine is to blame as of now, but EU regulators are meeting on Thursday to review findings about the vaccine and to decide what further action needs to be taken.

AstraZeneca has reported there have been 37 reports of blood clots out of more than 17 million people vaccinated in European Union and Britain. The drugmaker said there is no evidence the vaccine carries increased risks of clots.

Blood clots can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and blockages in the lungs.

Pfizer’s and Moderna’s vaccines are also used in the EU, and Johnson & Johnson’s has been authorized, but not deployed yet.

AstraZeneca is preparing to file for U.S. emergency use authorization for its vaccine later this month.
