On Tuesday morning in California, a Ford Expedition carrying 25 people crashed into a semi-truck killing 13 people. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed that a second accident involving 19 suspected illegal immigrants occurred at approximately the same time and location as the first.
The two incidents occurred early Tuesday morning when both SUV’s entered a 10-foot hold in the border fence and crossed illegally. The section of the fence was not part of the new border wall built by former President Trump.
Regarding the mass fatality crash, the CBP said in a statement “all are suspected to have entered the U.S. illegally.”
The second vehicle, described as a Chevrolet Suburban, was found nearby in flames on the U.S. side of the border. Authorities say 19 people were found hiding near the crash and federal law enforcement officials determined “they had entered the country illegally through the breach in the border fence.”
ICE announced they opened a human smuggling investigation around the circumstances of the crash and second vehicle fire.
“Special Agents from Homeland Security Investigations San Diego responded to the scene of today’s fatal crash in El Centro, California, and have initiated a human smuggling investigation,” ICE said in a statement. “The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available at this time.”
