Americans, like many other people, favor fair play. It likely comes from the Mother country’s attitudes on process and equitable treatment.
Well, the immigration bill proposed Thursday by Democrats in Congress is blatantly unfair, as it rewards breaking the law. Thousands all over world who obeyed the law and waited their turn to come to our shores get played as suckers. Plus, border security takes a back seat to higher immigration.
Republicans shouldn’t support any immigration reform bill that:
-Does not secure the border.
-Does not permanently end catch and release.
-Does not end incentives for illegal immigration.— Rep. Jim Jordan (@Jim_Jordan) February 16, 2021 [1]
On the other hand, something has to be finally and comprehensively done about the 12 million people who live in the shadows of our country. Since the Reagan administration Congress has made attempts to deal with this, to no avail. This is yet another attempt and Democrats have slight numbers on their side. Very slight. One senator or ten members of Congress defect to either side on this bill and it is finished. All on the Hill know that.
So consider this bill just a first draft. There will be massive wheeling and dealing and backroom compromises. But in the end, if both sides can make room for political reality, perhaps something can be done. It won’t be anything anybody loves. However, it could be something most can live with. And in politics, many times that’s the best you can get.
FNC: “Congressional Democrats unveiled on Thursday a sweeping immigration bill, backed by President Biden, that includes a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants — although the plan faces tough odds in the Senate.
The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 is close to a proposal announced by the White House on Biden’s first day in office. The biggest ticket item is an eight-year path to citizenship for illegal immigrants — which the White House has estimated to be 11 million. But it’s just one of a number of items in a broad bill that would also see illegal immigrants farmworkers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients immediately eligible for green cards. There would also be funding for counsel for children and vulnerable adults. It would also open up legal pathways to immigration even further, including expanding the controversial green card lottery from 55,000 a year to 80,000 a year and exempting children and spouses from visa cap numbers.”
But Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell called it a “massive proposal for blanket amnesty that would gut enforcement of American laws while creating huge new incentives for people to rush here illegally at the same time.” Senator Marco Rubio, R-FL, who was part of the 2013 “Gang of Eight” bipartisan immigration group, dismissed it as DOA.
Democrats in Trump districts will be under pressure not to cave to open border types. Republicans in districts heavy with Latin voters may have to watch their backs as well. Thus congressional leadership has their work cut out for them, and then some.
